Center for Whale Research Staff encountered L57 traveling north in Haro Strait with the J22 subgroup at 5:27 p.m., July 14, 2008. They were shortly joined by K16 and K35 also traveling slowly north. The Center staff continued past Turn Point on Stewart Island where they encountered L22 traveling with L89 and L79. There were many groups spread out across northern Haro Strait. As the whales approached North Pender Island, B.C. they grouped up and began traveling very close to shore. The encounter ended just off Thieves Bay at 7:40 p.m. The whales continued to travel north through Swanson Channel.
